about

“Something Borrowed” Is the first in a series of three records reflecting Henry’s recent creative audio research interests. A long time in the making, and stretching across a few shifts in Henry’s creative output, “Something Borrowed” is an important work in his creative history, spanning over 25 years. A development of ideas he’s been exploring since the late 1980s, especially in matters of texturalism – where all aspects of music are resolved as variations in texture, it’s also something completely new and his most complex effort to date. The title, “Something Borrowed”, refers to the fact that he had little or no hand in the creation of the basic sonic building blocks and formants of the sounds - they are all “borrowed”. Borrowed from synthesizer presets, sound effects records, or sample CDs, they were manipulated in a variety of software. He even reworked past compositions, borrowing from himself, even as those compositions wer emade from the same sets of borrowed sounds!

The cover art, a photo of a Chilly NJ beach at 4AM, was borrowed from a high school friend, Bill Kobasz (reliabledesign.blogspot.ca). The combined result is an evocative album of atmospheres and styles - ambient, industrial, glitch, and the avant-garde. A powerful listening experience, “Something Borrowed” is as demanding as it is lush, scattered as it is unrelenting, aggressive as it is gentle, soothing as it is alarming. From the lush and inspiring Old Friends to the lurching sonic catastrophe of A Darker Ecology, and influenced by Brian Eno, :zoviet*france:, Tim Hecker, and many of the fabulous artists of Auricular Records, “Something Borrowed” is a rewarding and profound listening experience.

Digital Download includes bonus liner notes and exclusive video for Old Friends. Digital download is available immediately when purchasing Compact Disc.
